An exhibition of Photographs and Psychedelic Art
from the 60’s counterculture

'Taking Liberties' is a retrospective of the photographic work of John 'Hoppy' Hopkins from the period 1960 to 1966. The work captures the ethos and aspirations of the counterculture which were expressed through pop, protest and art. Included are iconic images of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithful, jazz greats Roland Kirk, Thelonious Monk and others. A unique series of images capture the historic poetry convention at the Albert Halls in 1965, another of CND marches and anti-racist demonstrations illustrating the power of popular protest. Alongside these are images of Bikers at the legendary Ace Cafe in London, and a glimpse of the seediness of everyday life in Notting Hill.

The exhibition also includes some rare graphic and photographic memorabilia that relate to the times. Running alongside the exhibition in Street Level is an exhibition of covers of the International Times in the windows of Skratch design studio, at 53 King Street, by Trongate 103.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Much of Hoppy’s early work as a photographer has become iconic, though he is better known for his later interests that included the UFO club, Notting Hill carnival, International Times, Pink Floyd, London Free School, TVX & Fantasy Factory Video. But these are the roots, and the roots of rhythm remain. Now in his 70’s, this is the only published book of his photographs.

Intriguingly, the book has been supported by Lee Jeans Europe, who have dedicated their Gold Label collection to the author.
